Paolo Pops the First Cork at the Giro

Still pretty in pink (AFP)

Defending champion Paolo Savoldelli gave warning to his Giro d'Italia challengers Saturday by winning the opening 6.2km individual time trial around the Belgian village of Seraing.

The Italian Discovery Channel team captian AND two-time Giro winner (2005 and 2002) pulled on the maglia rosa, the overall leader's pink jersey, after beating Australia's Bradley McGee (Francaise des Jeux) by 11 seconds. Given that Salvodelli beat a whole host of specialists it is sure to serve as a sign that he is fully intent on defending his title this year.

Main rival Ivan Basso (CSC) finished in 13th place 23 seconds behind. Former two-time winner Gilberto Simoni (Saunier Duval) finished 16th at 26 seconds. And 2004 champion Damiano Cunego (Lampre) was 15th at 25.

And whither Jan, my favorite domestique?
T-Mobile's Jan Ullrich, who is using the race mainly to curb his appetite and build his fitness for the Tour de France in July, finished 80th at 49 seconds behind.
