Show - Me The 2009 Host Cities

Tour of Missouri Announces 2009 Host Cities Third Annual Elite Pro Cycling Race, Sept. 7-13

JEFFERSON CITY, MO - Event organizers and Missouri Lt. Governor Peter Kinder today announced the start and finish host cities and the overall course for the third Tour of Missouri professional cycling race, scheduled for September 7-13, 2009.

The following cities will play host to a leg of the Tour: St. Louis, Ste. Genevieve, Cape Girardeau, Farmington, Rolla, St. James, Jefferson City, Sedalia, Chillicothe, St. Joseph, and Kansas City.

"We had a record amount of cities inquire about the Tour of Missouri," said Lt. Governor Kinder. "It is a testament to the success of the race. We faced a very difficult process of eliminating some great cities. Our commitment, however, is to continue to route the course to all areas of the state. This year, for the first time, we will visit the southeast part of Missouri while spending a longer time north of Interstate 70. In addition, we will be able to highlight some of the agricultural regions."

The overall course will take on a very different slant in 2009. For the first time, the race will route east to west, starting in St. Louis and finishing in Kansas City. The past two years, the race routed west to east starting in Kansas City to finish in St. Louis. Stage by stage courses will be announced at a later date.

"In keeping with tradition, we will change the course from year to year to keep it fresh," said Chris Aronhalt, the managing partner of event organizers Medalist Sports of the Atlanta area. "There will be new drama on the race route and we expect a few more hills. Overall, we have some great and very excited host cities."

The race will be contested over seven days and seven stages. There will be two circuit races (St. Louis, Kansas City), one individual time trial (Sedalia), and four point to point road races (Ste. Genevieve to Cape Girardeau; Farmington to Rolla; St. James to Jefferson City; Chillicothe to St. Joseph).

"I like what they've done," said 2008 Tour of Missouri champion Christian Vande Velde, an American who also finished fourth overall at last years Tour de France. "Its a totally different race course and it looks like theyve added some challenging terrain. Last years race was very fast and tougher than it looked on paper. I look forward to coming back with my Garmin teammates to defend my title."

Added Team Columbia's Mark Cavendish of Britain, who won three stages of the 2008 Tour of Missouri: "Last years race was very well organized and promoted. I really liked it. As a sprinter, I had several opportunities to win races, which is always good. With more hills expected, well see what happens."

The overall mileage for the course is expected to be more than 600 miles.

Though a stellar world-class field was presented last year, the three-year-old race is expected to be event better as the Tour of Missouri was granted an upgrade to one of the top five-ranked events outside Europe by international and national federation's for cycling last month.

Team Type 1 Earns Invitation To Amgen Tour of California

In the run-up to the 2009 Amgen Tour of California, we will profile the final 9 teams invited to participate. On the clock, the team you should be rooting for both on and off the road, Team Type 1.

AtlantaTeam Type 1, the only professional cycling team in the world with a mission to spread inspiration to those affected by diabetes, will be one of 17 teams participating in the 2009 edition of the Amgen Tour of California.

Billed as America’s largest and most prestigious cycling event, the Tour of California will cover nearly 750 miles over nine days between Feb. 14-22. More than 1.6 million fans watched the third edition of the race last year. That number is expected to increase significantly in 2009 with the expected participation of seven-time Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong.

Team Type 1 co-founder Phil Southerland said the team’s inclusion completes another objective on the way to its long-term goal of participating in the 2012 Tour de France.

“This will also provide us with a tremendous opportunity to demonstrate how – through proper diet, exercise and the use of the best treatment and technology available – people with diabetes can live a normal, healthy lifestyle,” Southerland said. “We hope people with diabetes, and those affected by it, come out to meet us at the start and finish cities as well as cheer us at points all along the route.”

Team Type 1 was created in 2004 by Southerland and Joe Eldridge, a pair of avid cyclists with Type 1 diabetes. In 2006 and 2007, the pair captained Team Type 1 to back-to-back victories in the eight-person team division of the Race Across America (RAAM). In 2008, the team grew to include a 15-rider professional continental team that included four riders with Type 1 diabetes. In its inaugural pro season, Team Type 1 compiled 45 victories, including winning the team classification at the Tour de Beauce and the Vuelta Mexico and placing two riders in the Olympics.

In 2009, Team Type 1 is growing again – to include a triathlon team, a development team, a women's professional squad and a second team for RAAM: “Team Type 2.” The Type 1 athletes in these programs strive to instill hope and inspiration for people around the world affected by diabetes.

Team Type 1’s roster for the Tour of California will be announced at a later date. The team has previously competed in a number of international stage races, including the 2008 Tour de Georgia presented by AT&T – a race in which it finished third in the team classification.

Team Type 1 General Manager Tom Schuler, a former U.S. national road race champion who participated in nearly all of the country’s biggest races during his own racing career, said it will be an honor for the team to be part of a top-notch field that includes some of the top cycling teams in the world.

“We will certainly do our best to live up to the competitive expectations of what promises to be one of the most competitive bicycle races in the history of professional cycling in the United States,” Schuler said.

McDonald Sets Course Record In Challenge Wanaka Triathlon Win

As if you needed another reason to look into Wilier Triestina bicycles, the recently featured professional triathlete, Chris McDonald, set a PR on Wilier's Cento Crono during his 2009 debut

Atlanta, GAWilier Triestina USA has announced the victory of sponsored Ironman champion Chris McDonald atop its revolutionary Cento Crono time trial bike over the weekend. Just days ago the company had formally announced the 2009 partnership with Aussie McDonald, who disputed – and won – his first race as a Wilier-sponsored athlete in Lake Wanaka, New Zealand on January 17th.

Angelo Cilli, co-owner of North American distributor Wilier Triestina USA, was ecstatic: “We were interested in signing Chris because we knew he was a strong and savvy cyclist. He also seemed genuinely excited about the association with a brand boasting a long history in European road racing. The Cento Crono was made possible by Wilier’s openness to input from aerodynamics and positioning expert John Cobb, as well as Wilier’s ability to take that design and make an aero bike that handles like a performance road bike.” Cilli continued, “Chris liked the Crono immediately and was determined to ride it well at Wanaka. We told him we weren’t worried, that it was still early in the season. But he went out and won, and even bettered his previous bike-time by thirteen minutes!’”

McDonald explained that the Cento Crono not only allowed him to go faster in the bike segment, it also enabled him to enter the run less fatigued. “The bike was awesome! I took thirteen minutes off my bike time from 2007 – the old course record. The Crono felt great on the very rough roads which allowed me to feel fresher for the run,” reported McDonald. “I am very pleased to have won my first event of 2009 and my third title. It was also very satisfying to have been part of Wilier’s triumphant entry into the world of professional triathlon.”
McDonald will next compete at the Ochsner Ironman 70.3 in New Orleans on April 5th, and continues to set his sights on a top finish at the Ford Ironman World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii in October.

Day On

"Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve." - Martin Luther King, Jr.

In 1994, Congress initiated the King Day of Service in conjunction with the federal holiday honoring Dr. King. The day has evolved into a national day of community service grounded in Dr. King's teachings of nonviolence and social justice.

Coinicidentally on this day of service, the Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) has reached out to the global community to once again serve a greater purpose, to make cancer a global priority.

Combined with Lance Armstrong's return to professional cycling, the LIVESTRONG Global Cancer Campaign kicked off this week in Australia, where cancer is already the leading cause of death.

The LAF hopes to raise awareness and secure commitments around the world as Armstrong races in international events. Each country's commitment will focus on specific issues and concerns in their community, and will be aligned with one of the 2020 targets outlined in the World Cancer Declaration.

Domestically, the work of the LAF and the cancer community throughout the 2008 campaign has already provided dividends as President-elect Barack Obama committed to double the funding for cancer research and pledged to renew the war against cancer during his administration.

If you haven't found an avenue to channel your energy on this day of service, its not to late to get involved in the fight against cancer, or even to follow along.

The Return of the King

Lance Armstrong made his official return to the professional peloton Sunday at a pre-Tour Down Under Criterium in Adelaide. He finished in 64th and safely within the pack.

For the uninitiated, his underwhelming placement was considerably less grand than the Tolkien-esque one envisioned; announcing his re-entry by triumphantly riding his carbon steed across the finish line.

But for the rest of us, those who have followed his career from the start, his return was right on script. No one would expect the greatest stage racer of all-time, arguably, to jockey around with the speed demons of the peloton in a Criterium format, and certainly not is his first race back after a three-year hiatus.

Realistically, the first true measure of the man pundits used to refer to as the “patron of the peloton,” will be at the end of the six-day Tour Down Under stage race that begins on Tuesday January 20th and runs until the 25th.

A good placing would serve to validate his off-season training, which by all accounts has been well ahead of schedule, even when compared to the same time in the season during his Tour reigning days. And a win, well…the expectations for the spring and summer would most likely reach nuclear proportions.

Follow all the stories of Lance's return on the Triple Crankset Newsgroup, and the Tour Down Under on Versus (check your local listings).

Versus' Schedule:
1/20/2009 - 4:00 pm - 4:30 pm

Bridge to Nowhere

Yesterday, I ran across the “The Bridge Bicyclist” in the online version of the New York Times. Part of its One IN 8 MILLION segment, the multimedia item profiled Christian Hubert, a former Belgian citizen who has lived off and on in New York City since the 1960’s. Despite being afflicted with vertigo, Mr. Hubert has managed to consistently commute over the Manhattan or Brooklyn Bridge during his years in the city.

While viewing the piece, I couldn’t help but feel that this Saturday news item was equally befitting of one of my favorite Sunday morning shows, CBS’s Sunday Morning. Mr. Hubert’s tale, coupled with an introduction and narration by Charles Osgood, would have fit rather nicely before the oft un-bastardized closing nature scene. Cue the trumpets of Abblasen.

Strangely, these types of multimedia pieces that are found ubiquitously throughout the Internet these days have been partly responsible for the downfall of another Sunday [and daily] staple, the newspaper.

As Adrian Pratt points out, “What with blogs, Twitter, instant messaging, camera phones, news aggregators and thousands upon thousands of Web sites and citizen journalists, who needs newspapers in print or online?”

Some reports suggest that the New York Times may not last past the Spring, whereas other stalwart newspapers such as the Seattle Post-Intelligencer have already been earmarked for the media graveyard.

It’s hard to fathom, but picking up a girthed Sunday paper and sitting down to a cup of coffee may soon be considered nostalgic.

Team Garmin-Slipstream Introduces New Kit For 2009

Technology Innovations Continue to Help Garmin Athletes Break Away from the Pack

Boulder, COTeam Garmin-Slipstream, the top U.S. professional cycling team, today unveiled its 2009 team kits.

The new team kit highlights title sponsor Garmin's leadership role, while also bringing attention to Slipstream and its focus on ethical sporting and developing the next generation of American champions. Designed and produced by Pearl Izumi's Colorado-based Advanced Development Team, the 2009 kits are highlighted by the ultra aerodynamic time trial Speed-Suit. Second skin fit and strategically located, proprietary fabrics work together to create the fastest Speed-Suit ever produced and provide an aerodynamic advantage for riders. And, the kit wouldn't be complete without strong argyle elements, including orange shoulders and an orange-dominated Giro helmet – which will be easy to spot in the pro peloton.

"We constantly uncover the best technology and work with the best sponsors to give our athletes the competitive advantage,” said Jonathan Vaughters, Director Sportiff of Team Garmin-Slipstream. "Our unique partnership with Pear Izumi ensures that our guys are training and racing with the best kits available. And our signature argyle ensures that they stand out from the pack."

Pearl Izumi works exclusively with Team Garmin-Slipstream on all aspects of team kits, from shorts to jerseys to Speed-Suits, which are custom-made for each athlete and hand-sewn in the team's home state of Colorado.

"The beauty of our partnership with Team Garmin-Slipstream is that they share our passion for creating products that maximize the performance of their athletes and provide a competitive advantage," said Cache Mundy, Vice President of Marketing at Pearl Izumi. "Their quest for the best pushes us to be constantly innovating. Together with the team, we look forward to a great 2009 season and some of the fastest time trials ever witnessed."

Despite the change in design of the 2009 kits, Chipotle remains a valuable and significant sponsor of Team Garmin-Slipstream. According to Vaughters, "we are still powered by Chipotle burritos, as we always have been. Chipotle is our secret training weapon."

Wilier Trestina USA & Pro Triathlete Chris McDonald Join Forces in 2009

For the most part, Americans are still unfamiliar with the brand name Wilier Trestina. But the over a century old Italian bicycle manufacturer has made great inroads into the US market recently. One of the leading suppliers of high-end bicycles and equipment, Competitive Cyclist, has recently decided to carry the brand and now Wilier has entered the world of professional triathlon with the sponsorship of Ironman Champion Chris McDonald.

Italian Bicycle Manufacturer Announces Sponsorship of Ironman Champ McDonald

For the most part, Americans are still unfamiliar with the brand name Wilier Trestina. But the over a century old Italian bicycle manufacturer has made great inroads into the US market recently. One of the leading suppliers of high-end bicycles and equipment, Competitive Cyclist, has recently decided to carry the brand and now Wilier has entered the world of professional triathlon with the sponsorship of Ironman Champion Chris McDonald.

Atlanta, GA – Designed by internationally-acclaimed aerodynamics consultant John Cobb for Italian bicycle manufacturer Wilier Triestina, the Cento Crono time trial bike has officially entered the ring of professional multisport racing. One of an arsenal of three top-end bikes utilized by the Lampre European professional cycling team, including reigning World Road Champion Alessandro Ballan, the Crono will be ridden by pro triathlete and Ironman Champion Chris McDonald in 2009. McDonald’s first event on the Cento Crono will be the bike segment of the Challenge Wanaka in New Zealand on January 17th.

The choice of rider to represent Wilier on the world stage of professional triathlon was an important one, explained Angelo Cilli, co-owner of North American distributor Wilier Triestina USA. “We didn’t just want a strong multisport rider and we didn’t just want a likeable personality – we wanted both,” elaborated Cilli. “Our brand is near and dear to us, so we wanted to find a champion who valued our heritage, as well as the revolutionary design of the Cento Crono. Chris is someone we respect as a rider and like as a person; what more could you want in a sponsored athlete?”

The Cento Crono represents a cutting edge design by one of the industry’s most respected authorities. John Cobb has worked with numerous world-class cyclists, including Lance Armstrong and some of professional triathlon’s best male and female athletes. Although one of the most distinctive aero bikes in the industry, Cobb explains that the look and tubing of the Cento Crono have nothing to do with aesthetics, but all about aerodynamic efficiency and airflow management. “The Cento Crono is revolutionary because it is the first time trial bike based solidly on the principles of wave form dynamics,” clarified Cobb. “Turbulence eddies and ripples can slow down bodies of mass as they move through air or liquid, so it is not enough to shape a few tubes like fairings. The Cento Crono’s tubing and geometry not only facilitate airflow around the frame, but utilize strategically placed ‘splitters’ and tube shaping to direct the flow of air efficiently through and around the frame, spinning wheels and a rider’s body.”

Another unique feature of the Wilier Cento Crono is how well it handles in all types of conditions and on all kinds of terrain. “I have been amazed at how well this bike rides; it is superfast on flat and rolling courses, but climbs like a high-end road bike,” reported McDonald. “I am excited to be sponsored by a brand with such a rich cycling history – 103 years – and to be the first professional triathlete to race it in competition. I have sought to align myself with companies that strive for excellence, which is why I believe that Wilier and I make for a winning combination.”

Aerodynamics & Biomechanics Expert Launches Website

Famed Bicycle Frame & Components Designer, John Cobb, Launches New Company Website

Tyler, TX – John Cobb, founder of Cobb Cycling, today announced the launch of the company’s new website, www.cobbcycling.com, as well as the availability in late March of newly revamped VFlow saddles, designs that he has been manufacturing and selling for over 10 years.

Confidant, consultant or friend to many of the best road cyclists and triathletes in the world, Cobb has been one of the foremost authorities on aerodynamics, ergonomics, biomechanics and bicycle component design for over twenty years.

His work with athletes began with regionally competitive cyclists and multisport athletes, then grew into consulting work for prominent professional athletes, such as Greg LeMond and years later Lance Armstrong, and expanded to include the design of bicycle frames, forks, wheels, aerodynamic handlebars and extensions, bike saddles, helmets and waterbottle cages.

As a sought-after expert, Cobb has been offered many positions over the years as head engineer or lead product developer for various companies. After several years of designing and overseeing the manufacture of bicycle components for a company focused on the triathlon and road cycling markets, Cobb has decided that he prefers working for himself, promoting his own research, designs and consulting activities.

“I’ve learned a lot from my work at other companies, and I think that I’ve helped them bring some truly unique and advanced products to market,” explained Cobb. “But I can do the same thing as a consultant, as evidenced in the design of an aero frameset I did for a prominent international brand (currently being used by both a world champion pro road team and an Ironman champion), and in the creation of innovative new bicycle components.”

After being aligned with different personalities and organizations over the years, Cobb decided it was in his best interest to build his own company and brand, making his products available directly to the public. “Cobb Cycling allows me to follow my own research agenda, working more closely with a broader client base,” elaborated Cobb. “It also allows me to be more in charge of my own destiny,” he concluded.

Cobb will offer VFlow saddles initially, gradually introducing more products over the next eighteen months.

Bootleg Canyon's Brent Thompson Fundraiser

Donations to PayPal Account Requested to Offset Enormous Hospital Bill from Quad Bypass Surgery

Those who have participated in Interbike’s Outdoor Demo Days know the tortuous trails of Bootleg Canyon all too well. Earlier this week, Brent Thomson, Bootleg Canyon’s Trail Master, suffered a heart attack and underwent quadruple bypass surgery on January 14th. To help offset the healthcare cost, a PayPal account has been set up for those willing to contribute.

Boulder City, NV - Brent Thomson, Godfather and Trail Master of Bootleg Canyon suffered a heart attack last Saturday while riding the trails that he has famously cut into the mountains surrounding Boulder City, a stones throw from Las Vegas, Nevada.

While he is currently resting under doctors care in the hospital, Brent is scheduled for the second Quadruple bypass in his life. Sixteen years ago he had the same surgery performed due to an unusually high hereditary cholesterol build-up.

Brent's Job Provides No Health Insurance - PayPal Donations Needed
"I try to stay in reasonable shape, and was even riding when I started to feel chest pain and severe shortness of breath," says Thomson.

"My assistant Andrew helped me out and my son Barret got me to the hospital pretty quickly. Now I'm just waiting to go under the knife."

While everyone who has ridden the trails at Bootleg can attest, Brent's dedication to creating, maintaining and promoting the trails of Bootleg Canyon has created one of the most lauded riding areas in the Southwest. Unfortunately his position comes without a health insurance policy.
Brent's hospital expenses are estimated to grow to hundreds of thousands of dollars, so any help that his friends in the bicycle industry can provide will be graciously appreciated.

Click on the link below to donate securely with Debit, Credit, PayPal and Bank accounts. It is simple, quick and safe. Brent's family and friends send you appreciation in advance.

Feel free to send get well wishes to St. Rose Dominican Hospital - San Martin ER c/o Brent Thomson, 8280 West Warm Springs Rd., Las Vegas, NV 89113, and call Brent at 702.204.7810.

Signed Garmin Jersey Auction Benefits Just Go Harder Foundation

BOULDER, Colo. – Time is running out to bid on a one-of-a-kind piece of cycling memorabilia that will raise money for pro cyclists Ian MacGregor and Timmy Duggan's "Just Go Harder Foundation" that supports youth mentoring and participation.

An official Garmin pro-issue jersey featuring the signatures of racers on the 2008 roster of Team Garmin-Chipotle presented by H30 is up for bid on eBay. In addition to Christian Vande Velde's fourth-place finish at the Tour de France, Garmin won the team time trial at the Giro d'Italia and Vande Velde donned the pink jersey.

One-hundred percent of the profits from the jersey auction go to the Just Go Harder Foundation, a non-profit, 501(c) 3 organization that relies on fundraising and donations to offset the costs of sport and mentorship program fees. MacGregor and Duggan launched the foundation in 2007 to help deserving young adults enrich their lives through mentorship and participation in cycling and skiing.

"Timmy and I both realize how much the opportunity to ski and race our bikes – as well as the influence of mentors and coaches – shaped our lives," MacGregor said. "It wasn’t the free skis or cross-country trips to races that made a difference. Rather, it was the opportunity to enjoy the satisfaction of competing in the sport and being around mentors who genuinely cared."

Bids are being accepted at: http://tinyurl.com/8byj9o. The auction closes the night of Tuesday, Jan. 13. More information on bidding and shipping costs is available on the eBay page.

Mechanic Victorious, Team Type 1's Wilson Fifth At Australian Road Championships

Victoria, Australia – Team Type 1's Matt Wilson finished fifth in Sunday's Scody Australian Open National Road Championships, 20 seconds behind surprise winner Peter McDonald (Drapac Porsche Cycling).

McDonald, a 30-year-old bicycle mechanic, won a three-up sprint against a pair of riders from Team Columbia, Michael Rogers and Adam Hansen, who finished second and third, respectively. Rogers was looking to add the national road title to the individual time trial championship he won earlier this week, while Hansen was the silver medalist in last year's race.

Wilson, the 2004 Australian national road champion, arrived at the finish of the 101-mile (163 km) race 11 seconds behind fourth-place finisher Cameron Meyer. Only 45 of the more than 125 starters finished the race.

In the Scody Under 23 Men's Road Race, Team Type 1's Fabio Calabria finished 16th as Jack Bobridge (Team AIS) won his second gold medal of the week in dramatic fashion.

Bobridge sprinted clear of three breakaway companions after suffering a fall midway through the 76-mile (122 km) race. He was also victorious in the Mars Australia Men's Under 23 Time Trial.

Calabria, one of four riders on Team Type 1's 2009 squad who has Type 1 diabetes, was part of a group of 16 riders that finished one minute and 45 seconds behind the winner.

Louis Garneau To Sponsor Team Type 1

Six years after the sponsorship of the Saturn Professional Cycling Team, Louis Garneau is proud to once again partner with Tom Schuler, founder of Team Sports, Inc. and General Manager of Team Type 1.

The helmet and apparel sponsorship of Team Type 1, the only professional cycling team in the world with a mission to instill hope and inspiration for people around the world affected by diabetes, will represent a milestone in Louis Garneau history and a stepping stone of brand development similar to impact the Saturn Professional Cycling Team bestowed on Louis Garneau.

This partnership will represent the largest commitment Louis Garneau has made to the cycling industry because not only does it associate with one of the top UCI Domestic Based Men's Team, but in 2009 Team Type 1 is expanding to include a triathlon team, a developmental squad, a women's professional squad and two teams for the Race Across America (RAAM): Team Type 1 and Team Type 2.

"The concept of supporting a group of athletes that represent all levels of cycling and triathlon is the exact match for Louis Garneau who markets our brand as the 'Cycling and Triathlon Solution,'" says Pierre Perron, Marketing Director.

The pro team will be geared in up in some of the most technological and innovative clothing and helmets available including:

Carbon Ion Equipe Jersey - Developed for riders demanding a streamlined fit, the ultimate in styling, and fabrics that meet the test for comfort and maximum performance. High performance fit intended for pro cyclists. Extremely lightweight and quick drying. Radio pocket inside center back pockets are elasticized for a secure fit. Flatlock seams eliminate abrasion.

Power Bibs - Power Lycra base optimizes muscle performance, supports blood circulation, and is perfect for high intensity rides. Powermesh upper back is a skin-friendly mesh with compression properties to enhance performance. Conventional gripper is replace by a compressive Powerband that reduces lower leg pressure, provides muscle support, and does not restrict blood circulation. Contrasting flatlock seams are less abrasive and provide a "pro" look. Airgel Chamois.

Diamond Helmet - The Diamond represents our greatest achievement in helmets. At 285 grams and over 40 vents, we have designed a helmet to out perform the competition. Through patented technology, we have unleashed an absurd amount of ventilation while still meeting safety standards.

Superleggera Helmet - Our designers call the Superleggera, the pinnacle of TT helmet evolution. The Superlegegra once again pushes the limits of performance through the study of laminar airflow, weight reduction, and redistribution of weight to allow for a longer aero position.

Speed Skinsuits - The most aerodynamic fabric on the market for speeds of 15 to 45 mph. Optimal muscle support, supports blood circulation, wicks moisture, this one-piece skin is built for speed. With a sublimated power gripper that reduces lower leg pressure and provides muscle support. Speed Tech fabric's dimpled mesh construction allows for increased ventilation and comfort, but also reduces drag and improves aerodynamics.

Team Type 1 is the only professional cycling team in the world with a mission to instill hope and inspiration for people around the world affected by diabetes. In 2009, Team Type 1 is expanding to include a triathlon team, a developmental squad, a women's professional squad and two teams for the Race Across America (RAAM): Team Type 1 and Team Type 2. Ritchey Design Utilizes Social Networking Site to Increase Awareness for Project Rwanda

I know what you're thinking...not another social networking site! I can barely keep up with Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, CyclistVillage, and YourCycling. But how many social networking sites offer you the opportunity to turn your exercise routines into contributions for a non profit organization as worthwhile as Project Rwanda.

Ritchey partnership with Plus 3 Network helps members make "every mile count" towards bettering the economic development of Rwanda

SAN CARLOS, Calif. - Ritchey Design, a leading developer and manufacturer of high-quality road and mountain bike components, today announced it is working with Plus 3 Network, a beta social networking Web site, to increase awareness and fundraising efforts for the nonprofit organization, Project Rwanda.

By selecting Ritchey Design as a sponsor, Plus 3 members can choose to raise money for Project Ritchey Proj. Rwanda Rwanda with every mile they ride, walk, run or swim. The relationship between Ritchey and Project Rwanda went live on www.plus3network.com on January 7, 2009.

"Project Rwanda, while near and dear to the hearts of many cyclists in the industry, is also gaining support from thousands of individuals who simply recognize the power of a bicycle," said Steve Parke, general manager and vice president of marketing for Ritchey Design. "We are confident our partnership with Plus 3 Network will help connect active individuals everywhere with a very worthwhile cause."

Founded by Tom Ritchey after a compelling personal visit to Rwanda in 2005, Project Rwanda is committed to the concept that the bicycle can be an important tool in rebuilding a country, fostering national pride and addressing local issues facing Rwanda and other African nations.

"In the last two years, Project Rwanda has specifically helped Rwandan coffee farmers through our coffee bike program by providing a tool - our bike - that allows them to change the structure of their work day in a way that benefits their lives and the lives of their families and communities," said Susan Brown, executive director for Project Rwanda. "The contributions and awareness we gain from the partnership with Ritchey and Plus 3 Networks will help us continue this mission."

Individuals who would like to turn their regular (or irregular) fitness routines into a contribution to Project Rwanda can sign up to become a member of the Plus 3 Network at http://plus3network.com/user/signup.

Life Is What Happens...

...While You're Busy Making Other Plans.

If you've followed the Triple Crankset, the above quote attributed to John Lennon sort of sums up the recent nature of the site. Though we won't bore you with the gory details, suffice it to say that the site hasn't exactly been completely dormant (even though it may just seem that way).

Over the past several months, T-o-03 has manned our Publish2 Triple Crankset Newsgroup. Publish2 is a medium that powers "link journalism," or "linking to reporting or sources on the web to enhance, complement, or add more context to original reporting."

It allows us to bring you articles from a wide variety of cycling and mainstream media outlets that you may not exactly run across on a daily basis, while helping us build up a huge library of topic related links.

Our newsgroup can be found on the inner right rail (see inset) and will soon be linked to our Twitter page (which also needs some attention) as well.

In another bit of house cleaning news, we will be cleaning out the queue in the month of January. So stories, articles, race and technologic write-ups that we intended to post before "life happened" will be intermingled with more current material.

Also be on the lookout for other new features, new interviews, and a site redesign in the near future.

We will also be "heading back to Cali" in the new year as we have once again been credentialed for the Amgen Tour of California in February.  I'm not envisioning a Lance Armstrong tête-à-tête, but it certainly would be fun to get an exclusive during his first major road race on North American soil since deciding to come out of retirement.

In any event, we hope you'll join us for the upcoming racing season and beyond.

1/21/2009 - 4:00 pm - 4:30 pm
1/22/2009 - 4:00 pm - 4:30 pm
1/23/2009 - 4:00 pm - 4:30 pm
1/24/2009 - 3:30 pm - 4:00 pm
1/25/2009 - 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm

The athletes with diabetes in these programs serve as examples that diabetes can be controlled through diet, exercise and the use of the best treatment and technology available today.

Team Type 1 Pro Team Roster includes:

2009 Men's Team

Director Sportif: Vassili Davidenko (RUS)

Jack Seehafer leads an expanded women's squad for the 2009 season. Last year, the duo of Morgan Patton and Monique Hanley made history at the Kelly Cup in Maryland by what is believed to be the the first time two female athletes with Type 1 diabetes have finished on the podium of a national-level women’s bicycle race. Patton and Hanley finished second and third, respectively. Patton has lived with Type 1 the past 13 years while Hanley was diagnosed with Type 1 11 years ago.

Joining them on the squad will be the wily veteran Jen Mc Rae, formerly of Team Advil, who we last saw taking the victory at the USA Crits Series finale in Las Vegas last Fall; one of the best and brightest young riders on the national scene, Alison Powers, formerly of Colavita/Sutter Home; and the precocious talent of Samantha Schneider, fomerly of Mesa Cycles, among others.
