Cantele Lane - 20th Giro Donne Stage 5

Noemi Cantele (Bigla Cycling Team) claimed her first Giro Donne win yesterday by taking the 114km fifth stage, from Fossacesia to Cerro al Volturno, solo.

The Italian proved to be the strongest of a group of six that escaped midway through the stage. The group, which included Cantele’s teammate, Jennifer Hohl, Giorgia Bronzini (Safi Pasta Zara), Ina Yoko Teutenberg (Team Columbia), Sigrid Corneo (Selle Italy Ghezzi), and Julia Martisova (Gauss RDZ), would build up over a minute lead on the peloton heading into the final climb. But only Cantele would survive the finale that kicked up at 16% in some sections and was followed by a section of Pavè. Bronzini would cross the line in second just ahead of Teutenberg.
