Team Type 1 Women Win Speed Week; Powers Second At Gila

Atlanta – The Team Type 1 women’s professional cycling team posted its most impressive weekend of results to date by winning the USA Crits Speed Week series team crown, as well as the Lap Leader and Best Young Rider classifications.

The accomplishments came as Team Type 1’s Alison Powers was earning second place overall at the SRAM Tour of the Gila in Silver City, N.M. Powers finished behind Kristin Armstrong (Cervelo Test Team) in the five-day stage race.

“It was a good week of racing,” Team Type 1 Team Director Jack Seehafer said. “Alison was able to hold her own racing by herself in New Mexico. For the rest of the team (at Speed Week), one of the things we tried to emphasize this week was how to race for the win instead of just racing for a place.”

Kori Seehafer (ledt) capped the six-race series by finishing second in Sunday’s Global BMW Sandy Springs Criterium in Sandy Springs, Ga., that was won by Tina Pic (Colavita-Sutter Home presented by Cooking Light). Seehafer took home the Lap Leader jersey while Team Type 1’s Samantha Schneider (right) earned the Best Young Rider title.

Other members of the Speed Week series team were Jacqueline Crowell, Monique Hanley, Veronica Leal, Jennifer McRae and Morgan Patton. Hanley and Patton have Type 1 diabetes.

Powers will join the team for the Joe Martin Stage Race, which begins Thursday in Fayetteville, Ark., while Crowell will represent the University of Florida Friday through Sunday at the collegiate national championships in Fort Collins, Colo.

The Joe Martin Stage Race is the second event of the Women’s Prestige Cycling Series. Powers is the series leader and Kori Seehafer is first in the sprint competition. Powers said it will be nice to have the team compete together in a stage race for the first time since the Redlands Bicycle Classic in late March.

“Having a team (at Gila) would have been nice,” she said. “But I got some people to help me out and luckily I had the fitness to work very hard.”
