Eldridge Keeps Lead In Rider Of The Year Standings

East Point, Ga. – Team Type 1 co-founder Joe Eldridge maintained his lead in the East Point Velodrome Rider of the Year standings following Saturday’s “Outback Bikes presents The Wheelrace,” the second of three pro race series events at the Dick Lane Velodrome.

Eldridge finished third on points in the omnium scoring with a win in the madison, second in the 60-lap points race and five-lap scratch race and fourth in the miss-n-out and 20-lap motorpace races. Emile Abraham (AeroCat Cycling Team) took the overall Saturday night, ahead of Bennet VanderGenugten (Kenda Pro Cycling).

For the season, Eldridge leads Steve Hill (Brooks Cycles) by 50 points in the Rider of the Year standings. Abraham is third, 64 points behind.

As one of four riders on the Team Type 1 men’s professional squad who has Type 1 diabetes, Eldridge must closely monitor his blood glucose level during competition. In Saturday’s race, he went into the 60-lap points race with a level of 172 and finished at 146.

In the Madison race that he won later on that hot and humid night, he was 164 at the start and 240 at the finish.

“That race was very intense and high stress,” Eldridge said. “that’s what caused my blood glucose (to) spike. After the race, I did a bolus of Apidra to get the sugar back down and was at 103 about 45 minutes after the race.”

Hanson Wins At San Rafael

San Rafael, Calif. – Ken Hanson of Team Type 1 shot through the darkness to win the San Rafael Twilight Criterium in front of several thousand spectators Saturday night in the Marin County town north of San Francisco.

Hanson, the reigning U.S. elite national criterium champion beat U.S. professional criterium champion Rahsaan Bahati (Rock Racing) and Daniel Holloway (Team Garmin-Slipstream) to earn his second win of the year and seventh podium finish.

“It was pretty fast, so I just waited for my time to move up,” Hanson said. “Coming through the last corner, he (Bahati) went left with Holloway, I had an open slot to the right so I had a clear shot to the line. Fortunately, I was able to hold it all the way.”

Hanson said he remained patient throughout the 75-minute race, even as a number of breakaways threatened to spoil the field sprint. With no teammates to help chase them down, it was left to the Hanson to do much of the work.

“I made some big efforts to stay up front and go with any dangerous moves,” he said. One time I had to chase for half a lap.”

Powers Victorious At Winter Park Series Race

Winter Park, Colo. – Alison Powers of Team Type 1 won her final tune-up before this weekend’s USA Cycling Mountain Bike National Championships by capturing the Valley Point-to-Point mountain bike race Saturday in Winter Park, Colo.

The reigning U.S. national time trial champion was 22 seconds faster than Eszter Horanyi (Waltworks/Fuentes Design) over a 23.5-mile (37.8 km) course that featured 2,600 feet of climbing. Amy Dombroski (Webcor Builders) finished third.

Powers’s victory was her 12th of the season and the 27th for the Team Type 1 women’s professional team.
