The last time a Quick Step rider did not take home the donkey trophy for winning Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne (K-B-K) was in 2005, which not to surprisingly was the last time a Quick Step rider won the annual kick-off to the Classics in Het Volk.
This time around it was team captain Tom Boonen (Quick Step) who took the honors and exacted the team’s revenge for missing out on the prior day’s victory. Boonen easily out-kicked Team Columbia-Highroad’s Bernhard Eisel and Cervelo Test Team’s Jeremy Hunt to the line for his second K-B-K win, the first coming in 2007.
Cycling’s hardmen are set to take a detour south on March 21st for the first of the five monuments of cycling, La Primavera, Milano-Sanremo, before returning to the cobbles for The Ronde on April 5th.
