Victoria, Australia – Team Type 1's Matt Wilson finished fifth in Sunday's Scody Australian Open National Road Championships, 20 seconds behind surprise winner Peter McDonald (Drapac Porsche Cycling).McDonald, a 30-year-old bicycle mechanic, won a three-up sprint against a pair of riders from Team Columbia, Michael Rogers and Adam Hansen, who finished second and third, respectively. Rogers was looking to add the national road title to the individual time trial championship he won earlier this week, while Hansen was the silver medalist in last year's race.
Wilson, the 2004 Australian national road champion, arrived at the finish of the 101-mile (163 km) race 11 seconds behind fourth-place finisher Cameron Meyer. Only 45 of the more than 125 starters finished the race.
In the Scody Under 23 Men's Road Race, Team Type 1's Fabio Calabria finished 16th as Jack Bobridge (Team AIS) won his second gold medal of the week in dramatic fashion.Bobridge sprinted clear of three breakaway companions after suffering a fall midway through the 76-mile (122 km) race. He was also victorious in the Mars Australia Men's Under 23 Time Trial.
Calabria, one of four riders on Team Type 1's 2009 squad who has Type 1 diabetes, was part of a group of 16 riders that finished one minute and 45 seconds behind the winner.
