Rock Racing’s Sevilla Third In Qinghai Lake Opener
Xining, China — Oscar Sevilla’s third place finish led Rock Racing in the prologue time trial of the seventh Tour of Qinghai Lake Friday in Xining, China.
In the 2.3-mile (3.8 km) race through the streets of the Qinghai Lake capital, Sevilla was 12 seconds off the winning ride of Alex Rasmussen (Danish National Team) and two seconds slower than David McCann (Giant Asia Racing).
Sevilla was one of three Rock Racing riders who placed in the top 15 in the opening event of the 10-day, nine-stage race: Michael Creed was fifth (16 seconds behind) and Tyler Hamilton was 12th, 22 seconds back.
Sevilla said he hopes to enjoy good form in China after strong performances at the Vuelta a Colombia in May, the Commerce Bank series in the Philadelphia area last month and a runner-up finish at the Spanish national road race two weeks ago.
“I felt a little bit out of sync because I haven’t ridden my bike in the last two-and-a-half days,” Sevilla told Cyclingnews.com. “I did everything that I could in order to get going. The altitude is going to be a major factor but I am pretty confident that I will be able to do well.”
As the squad has all year, Rock Racing unveiled a new team kit designed by Team Owner Michael Ball. The eye-catching uniform features a flaming orange dragon.
Saturday’s race is a 90-mile (145 km) race from Xining to the Qinghai Lake Hotel.
