So, whither Team Discovery after Yaroslav Popovych's (impressive?) 12th Stage victory in the Tour de France Friday.
This is the public face:
Popovych said that team manager Johan Bruyneel was "more sad that angry" after Discovery riders struggled in the Pyrenees on Thursday.
Bruyneel could not have been much happier Friday morning when Disconvery lost two riders, including two-time Giro d'Italia winner Paolo Savoldelli after sustaining injuries when he crashed into a spectator after Thursday's stage (lovely). Savoldelli had to have 13 stitches in a cut above his eye.
"But life is like that, you can't always win and now we can start the second half of the Tour," Popovych said.
Nice re-start. But what does it mean?
Popovych cut his deficit in half to 4:15 and is now 10th in the GC. Bruyneel insists that Discovery is only pursuing stage wins at this point, not the GC.
But it is not like Johan Bruyneel to tell us his strategy. It's unlikely that Popovych would be allowed to break away in the next two relatively flat stages without some response by Phonak.
Perhaps it will be another Discovery rider.
Perhaps Phonak will mark a breakaway.
Or perhaps Popovych is fresher than we suspect and his form will allow a GC, rather than a mere stage, challenge in the Alps during stages 15-16-17.
It is something to watch as Floyd Landis enjoys his second-consecutive day in yellow.
I believe Bruynel. Papo doens't have the gas (or team) to rule the Alps.
ReplyDeleteagreed '03 - great stage win but Popo used a lot of his legs today ... and his win really threatened Rabobank, Davitamon-Lotto, CSC & T-Mobile's podium hopes more than Landis's yellow (so they'll have to help in the next few days if there's another threatening break like today)
ReplyDeleteMenchov could be the real deal though, but Floyd would have to crack (and Tues-Wed-Thurs could crack anybody!)
Menchov worries me, too. I don't think Discovery is a GC threat, but I would not underestimate Bruyneel. Of course, he isn't riding; Hincapie is -- sort of. Kloden remains a threat, too. And even Levi, although he has a lot of time to still make up. Obviously, we are all rooting for Floyd!
