Now this hurts.
There's Axel Merckx on the verge of a heroic solo Stage 10 win in the Giro d'Italia Tuesday, just 150 meters from the finish. Instead, the chase group closes in ... closer ... closer ... closer ... until the Phonak rider is caught by Liquigas-Bianchi rider Franco Pellizotti at the very end of the 190km run south from Termoli to Peschici.
Said The-Son-Of: "You go through every possible emotion (Merckx sat motionless with his head draped on his handlebars for at least a minute). "You are disappointed because you think you are not going to make it, and then you see the board for 600 and 500 and 400 meters, and you think, well, maybe there is a chance, and they won't be able to come back if they hesitate in the corners. "But when I saw them at 150 meters, everything went away."
No change in the GC. It's still Ivan Basso by 94 seconds.
Actually an interesting change in the GC, with the stage winner Pellizotti launching himself into 4th overall and moving Salvodelli down to 5th.
