Vitoria Rocks It Again

Toluca, Mexico – Rock Racing’s David Vitoria rode to his second straight stage win and donned the King of the Mountains jersey Thursday following the fifth stage of the Vuelta Mexico Telmex.

The Swiss sensation teamed with Jackson Rodriguez (Serramenti PVC Diquigiovanni-Androni Giocattoli) to break away from a small group following the eighth categorized climb of the 133-mile (215 km) race. While Vitoria was earning Rock Racing’s ninth win of the season, Rodriguez was displacing teammate Gilberto Simoni as the race leader.

“I’m very satisfied,” Vitoria said. “When I made the breakaway, our director (Rudy Pevenage) changed the strategy of the race to go after the yellow jersey. We were very close today.”

Vitoria shot from 18th to third overall, 42 seconds back of Rodriguez, while Rock Racing teammate and defending Vuelta Mexico champion Glen Chadwick climbed two spots to fifth, 53 seconds back.

On the longest stage of the eight-day race, Rock Racing slipped Vitoria and U.S. road race champion Tyler Hamilton into a seven-man breakaway that gained eight minutes on a rapidly diminishing peloton that shattered as it approached the summit finish at 11,000 feet.

Joining the pair in the move was Chris Jones (Team Type 1), Eddy Ratti (Amica Chips-Knauf), Karl Menzies (OUCH Pro Cycling Team Presented By Maxxis), Hector Rangel (Canel’s Turbo), and former yellow jersey wearer Juan Pablo Magallanes (Mexican National Team).

Friday’s 109-mile (177 km) route begins in León and features two sprints and two categorized climbs before a flat run-in to the finish in Guanajuato.

Initial Participants To Conquer The Midwest Announced

Roughly 6 months until its start, the organizers of the Tour of Missouri have received commitments from some of the world's top cycling teams in Garmin-Slipstream, Columbia-High Road, Liquigas, and the Cervelo Test Team.

Jefferson City, MO - Event organizers and Missouri Lt. Governor Peter Kinder today announced the first five teams for the third Tour of Missouri professional cycling race, scheduled for September 7-13, 2009.

Top United States-based teams Garmin-Slipstream and Columbia-High Road, one of Italy's top pro tour teams Liquigas, as well as the Swiss-based Cervelo Test Team, have been announced.

"We have had record interest in the event, which has precipitated the early announcement of the first teams committed to participate," said Chris Aronhalt, the managing partner of event organizer Medalist Sports. "The stature of the Tour of Missouri continues to grow, and the participation of top teams like Columbia-High Road, Garmin-Slipstream, Liquigas, and Cervelo --- all teams expected to race in the Tour de France this year --- justifies this event's world-class reputation. We anticipate the announcement of more teams in the next couple weeks."

The overall course will take on a very different slant in 2009. For the first time, the race will route east to west, starting in St. Louis and finishing in Kansas City. The past two years, the race routed west to east starting in Kansas City to finish in St. Louis.

"To attract some of the top teams in the world shows how important the Tour of Missouri has become," said Missouri Lt. Governor Peter Kinder. "The caliber of athletes and teams will translate directly into more spectators and more economic impact for the state and host cities."

Garmin-Slipstream is expected to field a top team that will include 2008 Tour of Missouri Race Champion Christian Vande Velde. In the off-season, the team also signed Canadian Svein Tuft, who finished third overall in last year's race.

"We're coming back to Missouri to win again," said Garmin-Slipstream's general manager Jonathan Vaughters. "It's a major objective for us, as it's our chance to show Garmin and its employees what we're all about in their backyard."

Added Vande Velde: "I liked the Tour of Missouri last year. It was well publicized, well organized and had great spectators. Truly world class. It was great to finish my season with a major stage race in the Midwest and not far from my home (in the Chicago area). I look forward to coming back to defend my title with my Garmin teammates."

Columbia-High Road features 2007 Tour of Missouri champion George Hincapie of Greenville, S.C., and Britain's Mark Cavendish, who won three stages of the 2008 race and the Edward Jones Sprint Points jersey, and widely is considered the world's 'fastest man on two wheels.'

"We are looking forward to sending a top team to Missouri again this year," said Bob Stapleton, the owner and general manager of Team Columbia-High Sports, the No. 1-ranked team in the world last season. "We had a great time last year with good success (four stage wins and second place overall). We look to come back and do the same again this year. The race is very well organized and the people of Missouri were extremely welcoming and enthusiastic about the racing."

Liquigas, an entrant into last year's race, is one of Italy's top teams and last year was led by Czech Republic's Roman Kreuziger, who won the Best Young Rider jersey.

The Cervelo Test Team will be a first-time entrant into the Tour of Missouri. Cervelo's team features 2008 Tour de France champion Carlos Sastre, top Norwegian sprinter Thor Hushovd, who already has won a stage of the Amgen Tour of California and Het Volk event this year, and Dominque Rollin, who finished third overall in the 2007 Tour of Missouri and won the Michelob ULTRA King of the Mountain jersey last year.

Race rosters will not be announced until next August but team directors are already talking about sending many of their top stars, said Aronhalt.

The race will be contested over seven days and seven stages. There will be two circuit races (St. Louis, Kansas City), one individual time trial (Sedalia), and four point to point road races (Ste. Genevieve to Cape Girardeau; Farmington to Rolla; St. James to Jefferson City; Chillicothe to St. Joseph).

The overall mileage for the course is expected to be more than 600 miles.

Though a stellar world-class field was presented last year, the three-year-old race is expected to be even better as the Tour of Missouri was granted an upgrade to one of the top five-ranked events outside Europe by international and national federation's for cycling. The upgrade will guarantee more top teams. Additional teams will be announced in coming weeks.

Rocky Mountain High, Don't Mess With Texas - North American Handmade Bicycle Show

Indianapolis, IN - The framebuilders in the Mountain time zones weren't the first to fabricate a bicycle from titanium, but they have certainly had a hand in perfecting and expanding the use of the incredibly light, strong, durable, resilient, and corrosive resistant material.

And if you think that cyclists like Lance Armstrong and our friend Liz Hatch are the only bicycling related beauties to come out of Texas, you would be wrong.

In Part II of our NABHS series, we'll take a look at some of the framebuilders from the states of Colorado, Montana and Texas, and their creations that were on display last weekend at the 5th Annual North American Handmade Bicycle Show.

Eriksen Cycles has been in existence since 2006, but Kent Eriksen’s name has been synonymous with cycling for quite some time now as a member of the mountain bike hall of fame, a framebuilder, and the founder of Moots Cycles. Specializing in titanium frames, everything is designed and fabricated in-house at their Steamboat Springs, CO shop. At this year’s NAHBS, Eriksen won the “Best Titanium Bicycle" award. See other award winners.

Like Eriksen Cycles, Moots Cycles shares Steamboat Springs and the mastery of titanium in common. Moots has been “committed to handbuilding the finest bikes for cyclists around the world” since 1991.

DEAN Titanium Bicycles is quite literally the dean of titanium crafted bicycles in Colorado. Founded by two racers who wanted to “produce the most technically advanced bicycles in the world,” DEAN has been making bikes since 1990. Though known primarily for their titanium constructs, the independently owned, Boulder-based company also crafts bicycles using steel, scandium and carbon.

In the category is Black Sheep Bikes from Fort Collins, CO. Each one of their custom made bicycles, especially the 36” wheeled ZAMer experiment, pushes the envelope on titanium tube construction. As one patron at the show noted to me upon seeing their creations, “it looks like someone had some serious fun making those tubes.” If you didn’t know it already, curves are definitely back in.

David Kirk began working as a professional framebuilder in 1989. Working with Serotta and then Carl Strong, Kirk finally went off on his own and created Kirk Frameworks. As a one-man shop operating out of Bozeman, MT, Kirk designs and builds every frameset “with its rider in mind and reflects the preferences and personality of its owner.”

KirkLee Bicycles are “Built for Speed, Built for You.” The Austin, TX based company specializes in full custom carbon fiber bicycles. Every bike is essentially a one-off creation, although standard sizes are an option. Owner Brad Cason took me through the paces of some of his creations, which included masterful carbon weaves, painstakingly detailed paint jobs, and an integrated Chris King headset.

Making the trip up from Austin with KirkLee Bicycles was True Fabrication Bicycles. Founded by the trio of Cody Baron, Clark Davidson, and Cole Thompson, True Fabrication has been TIG-welding steel road, mountain, track, and commuter frames since 2005.

Premiering at the 5th NAHBS was Alchemy Bicycles of San Antonio, TX, which had several offerings.

Vitoria Rocks Vuelta Mexico With Solo Win

Cuernavaca, Mexico – The wins just keep coming for Rock Racing, with David Vitoria being the latest rider to throw a double-armed salute in the air for the team whose uniforms feature the words “Rock’s Not Dead.”

The fourth-year Swiss pro soloed to victory in Wednesday’s fourth stage of the Vuelta Mexico Telmex. His win in the 124-mile (200 km) race from Tlaxcala to Cuernavaca marked the team’s eighth win of the year and its third in the past five days.

On Saturday, Rahsaan Bahati led a 1-2 finish by Rock Racing at the Merco Classic Downtown Criterium, followed by Iggy Silva’s win at the Merco Classic Foothills Road Race on Sunday.

In Wednesday’s race, Vitoria escaped from three others – Arquimedes Lam (Tecos De La Uga), Francesco Rivera (Amica Chips-Knauf) and Andrew Pinfold (OUCH Pro Cycling Team Presented by Maxxis) – on a steep climb in the closing miles to beat Lam by 20 seconds. Pinfold was third, 1:53 behind.

Gilberto Simoni (Serramenti Pvc Diquigiovanni-Androni Giocattoli) retained the overall lead by finishing in the peloton, 2:49 behind Vitoria. Rock Racing’s Enrique Gutierrez placed seventh on the day and is fifth in the overall standings, 10 seconds behind. Rock Racing’s Glen Chadwick (inset), the race’s defending champion, is seventh overall, 13 seconds back.

At 133 miles (215 km), Thursday’s fifth stage is the longest of the eight-day race and features no fewer than eight King of the Mountain hot spots before ending in Toluca.

Hydration In Overdrive

Innovative Health Solutions announces the launch of the newest innovation in sports hydration based on the latest hydration research - H2O Overdrive™, being distributed through Europa Sports Products

PARK CITY, Utah - Innovative Health Solutions™, LLC (IHS) today announced it is shipping H2O Overdrive™, one of the most comprehensive and nutritionally balanced high-performance sports hydration beverages for use before, during and after any physical activity. H2O Overdrive has partnered with Europa Sports Products (Europa), a leading health foods and products distributor, to deliver the beverage to health food stores and specialty retailers.

Based on years of research and development, H2O Overdrive is a precise ratio of carbohydrates, protein, essential vitamins, minerals, amino acids and other vital nutrients formulated to drive hydration at the cellular level. It is a sports energy drink that supports
  • Glycogen resynthesis
  • Energy production
  • Muscle function and stamina, as well as
  • Protein synthesis for muscle recovery
At a time when weight gain, obesity and diabetes are each at record highs and consumers are looking for healthier alternatives to high-sugar beverages, IHS feels H2O Overdrive delivers a viable alternative. Its unique formula contains only three grams of sugar- less than 1/10 the sugar found in most well-recognized drinks sold in the sports hydration category.

Europa is distributing H2O Overdrive out of each of its six distribution centers in Charlotte, N.C., Mesquite, Texas, Strongsville, Ohio, Fresno, Calif., Orlando, Fla. and Windsor, Conn. Europa supplies more than 14,000 gyms, health food stores, specialty retailers across the United States including U.S. military post exchanges. H2O Overdrive will be featured at Europa's booth at the Natural Products Expo West, March 6-8 at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, Calif.

H2O Overdrive is packaged in 20 oz. single serving, re-sealable bottles with a suggested retail price of $3.29 per bottle and is currently available in the following flavors:
  • Lychee-Lemon Rush
  • Tangy Tangerine Freeze
  • Jostaberry
"I have been developing nutritional products for some of the best known and well-respected companies in the industry for more than 20 years," says Terry Giles, IHS co-founder and the developer of H2O Overdrive. "This makes me confident and proud to say that the future of hydration is here with H2O Overdrive. The formulation is a precise balance of protein, carbs, a balanced spectrum of electrolytes combined with specific amino acids and essential vitamins, minerals and other vital nutrients each with a specific purpose to target a specific physiological response.

"The end result is a beverage that truly hydrates your body at the cellular level, promotes recovery and stamina and actually quenches your thirst. As a competitive martial artist, powerlifter, armwrestler, bodybuilder, professional race car driver and certified nutrition specialist, I know that athletes in every sport need a product with the right combination of protein and carbs, as well as other essential nutrients and electrolytes to maximize their physical and mental performance. We're excited for consumers to use this beverage and let the oral hydration science behind it help them achieve their athletic goals and leave their competition in the dust."

Eric Schlopy, U.S. alpine skier and Giant Slalom champion, is one of several dozen Athlete Ambassadors for H2O Overdrive. According to Schlopy, the beverage helps him maximize his workouts without overloading on sugar.

"In 18 years as a professional athlete I've never come across a more complete, effective and dynamic sports hydration drink," Schlopy said. "I used to have to cut and paste protein bars, sports drinks and various supplements to get even close to the same benefits I get from H2O Overdrive. And the best part, it tastes fantastic and smooth going down."

H2O Overdrive Science and Ingredients
H2O Overdrive contains a three-to-one ratio of specific carbohydrates to a high-quality protein substrate, formulated with a balanced electrolyte matrix, specific amino acids, essential vitamins and minerals as well as a few other key nutritional ingredients promotes hydration/rehydration at the cellular level. This allow H2O Overdrive to stimulate nutrient uptake within the cell, promoting and supporting energy, muscle function, stamina and recovery by triggering specific physiological responses.

Recent studies have shown that protein-carbohydrate electrolyte sports beverages improve performance better than carbohydrate-electrolyte sports beverages or water alone. Additionally, the caffeine equivalent to "one cup of coffee" in H2O Overdrive helps active bodies use stored energy before muscle protein to prolong endurance. It also enhances blood vessel widening (dilation) for increased nutrient transport and increased cognitive response; or in other words, it helps enhance protein absorption and increases brain function.

Go West Young Man - North American Handmade Bicycle Show

Indianapolis, IN - Some would tell you that the art of framebuilding begins and ends in Oregon, and more specifically in Portland. With the number of framebuilders in the Portland area and with the great care in which each builder has taken to perfect his craft, it would be hard to argue the point.

In Part I of our look at the North American Handmade Bicycle Show (NAHBS), we'll take a look at some of the framebuilders from the Portland area and others on the West Coast.

Headlining the Portland contingent of bicycle framebuilders at the 5th Annual NAHBS was Sacha White of the Vanilla Workshop. The 32-year-old White has been building frames since 1999 and has garnered many accolades along the way. With his custom-made Vanilla Bicycles and his race inspired off shoot, Speedvagen, White has already secured a spot on the Mt. Rushmore of framebuilders, if they ever decided to create one.

COURAGE Bicycles are built by Aaron Hayes, who uses his design and engineering background as an industrial designer to create racing, touring, and city bicycles of “exquisite detail and craftsmanship.” Last year, his creations earned him the “Best New Builder” award at NAHBS. And by the looks of his crowded booth this year, his reputation and his designs certainly preceded him.

MAP Bicycles' owner and builder, Mitch Pryor, creates bikes that “reflect the growing urge to make cycling a part of everyday life.” Pryor’s focus on randonneur, touring and commuting bicycles equipped with originally designed custom racks paid off handsomely this year. For his efforts, Pryor took home the NAHBS “Best City Bike” award. See other award winners.

Jordan Hufnagel
took John B.L. Soule’s charge, to go west, to heart and moved from his Indiana home to found Hufnagel Cycles. Although his framebuilding skills were on display, as you will note from his NAHBS biography, his creativeness also spilled on to paper.
“As a small boy, Jordan Hufnagel constructed miniature bicycles out of twigs, corn husks and paraffin wax in order to traverse the Indiana maize labyrinths in which he was raised. When steel was invented, Jordan spent long nights in the township fraidy hole teaching himself to weld. His family was unsupportive of his efforts, often force-feeding him lumpy and tepid gruel. When he was old enough, Jordan stuffed two pairs of jeans, a T-shirt and a broken music box into a satchel and hid himself in the cargo bay of a mail plane bound for Portland, Ore. An emaciated Jordan wandered into the rain and through the city streets until he passed out under a picnic table. A group of school children woke him and fed him apples and blackberries from their sack lunches. To show his gratitude, Jordan built them bicycles. He has been in business ever since.”

Signal Cycles are designed and crafted by Matt Cardinal and Nate Meschke. The bicycle obsessed “mechanics, artists, coffee consumers and cat lovers,” push each other to create bicycles with the goal of giving their customers “a heart attack…of sheer joy…of biking.” With their wine bottle holding custom rack in tow, I couldn’t think of better way to go.

Ahearne Cycles are handbuilt with “love and fury” by Joseph Ahearne. He creates “unique, intelligently designed steel bicycle frames, racks and other miscellany.” Of the miscellany Ahearne has created, none has stuck out more than the “Spaceman Bicycle Flask Holster,” a cage that attaches to standard water bottle mounts and securely carries a whiskey flask. With a Celtic knot inspired headbadge, my only question is, “would that be Jameson or Bushmills in yer flask, laddy?”

Well south of Portland, Ore. sits the town of Ashland, home to one of the NAHBS’ “original six,” Mike DeSalvo. DeSalvo Custom Cycles is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. As such, DeSalvo brought along the first bicycle he ever built (center), and a road frame he is currently offering to commemorate the occasion (bottom) to this year’s show. It may be surprising to some, but after 10 years of framebuilding DeSalvo has not taken on an employee and still builds each frame with his own hands.

Another member of NABHS' "original six" is Craig Calfee of Calfee Design. Based in La Selva, CA, Calfee was one of the pioneers of carbon fiber framebuilding. He has really expanded his repertoire by working with natural materials such as hemp and bamboo. At this year's show, two of his bamboo creations were on display.

Naked CyclesSam Whittingham stole last year’s NAHBS. The Quadra Island, BC based framebuilder swept the top three NAHBS awards with a crazed fixie creation that presently resides in Austin with Lance Armstrong. This year’s offering, a 29er named Cherry Bomb, was also a show-stopper and earned Whittingham the “People’s Choice” award. See the other award winners.

The Watsonville, CA based company, RR Velo, has been manufacturing and repairing carbon fiber bicycles for other brands for more than 14 years. But now, builder Edgar Chavez has teamed up with former professional rider "Fast Freddy" Markham to produce bicycles under their own label using the "best and most labor-intensive way to make a full-carbon bicycle."

Jeremy SyCip has been building frames and components since 1992. Based in Santa Rosa, CA, SyCip Designs, Inc. product line includes “steel, titanium, aluminum and carbon road, mountain, cross, track, singlespeed, full suspension and cruisers.” So basically, everything. SyCip also designs custom forks and stems.

A bike designer, a graffiti artists and a high-bicycle fabricator get together in Oakland. No this isn't the precursor to a joke, but rather into Broakland Bicycles. The "two Jasons and a Steve" have been building quality track frames since 2006. Each is designed, crafted and painted in Oakland, CA.

Sillgey Cyclery, Inc. is based out of Irvine, CA. Working exclusively is steel in order to bring "high quality bicycles at affordable prices," their fabrications are an amazing kaliedoscope of colors.

Last but not least of the West Coast contingent that I visited with is Inglis/Retrotec Cycles. Based in beautiful Napa Valley, Curtis Inglis has been building bicycles for more than 15 years. And judging by the level of detail in his offerings at the 2009 NAHBS, you could tell he wouldn’t want to be doing anything else.
